Michael, Man and the Dragon

This bronze relief takes a legend as its point of departure and one story invites the telling of another.  In Michael’s battle with a dragon we see the powerful struggle we experience both within and around us, the strength of the human will, and in the planes and angles of bronze, the play of darkness and light.

There is also a version of this relief sculpted in wood that guards the entrance of the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City. It can also be seen here in this gallery. It is an embodiment of the battle of St. Michael with the dragon. Between the opposing cosmic forces of Michael and the dragon, stands a small human being. Overcoming immense resistance with single-minded activity, he confronts the beast, which is turning its head up and back towards the clear countenance of St. Michael.
